12/10/2007: Initial release of VMT v1.0.

Welcome to the Visibility Modeling Tool (VMT)

The VMT is a software application developed by the Michelson Science Center (MSC) to allow prospective or experienced users of optical interferometers to approximately model the interferometric observables for objects of interest using a simple interface. A new component in the MSC's getCal suite of observation planning utilities, the VMT performs visibility amplitude (and null depth in the case of the KI) predictions, and thus will serve astronomers in the observation planning stage of their investigations.

  • For information on how to use the VMT, please refer to the VMT User's Guide.
  • For any questions, comments, or bug reports, please visit the MSC Help Desk.

The VMT can be run by either of the two methods provided below: run the web applet, or download the executable application.

    Visibility Modeling Tool Applet:

  • Double-click the Start button below to start up the applet version of the tool.
  • Please be patient.  The first session may take a few moments to download.

  • Wait for "Start VMT Applet vmt-x.y" to appear in the button before clicking.

To avoid inadvertantly terminating your VMT session, it is recommended that you minimize this browser after starting up the applet.

    NOTES:

    • This applet requires JRE 1.4 or later installed on your computer. If you don't see the applet button above after a short period (or a red X), you may need to install Java on your computer or enable your browser for Java with a Java Plug-in. There are many websites that can help determine which version of Java you are using as well as upgrading your Java version such as javatester.org. You can find more information in the VMT User's Guide, section 2.

    Visibility Modeling Tool Executable Download:

A downloadable version of the executable is available through the MSC Download Portal.
